When the colony of Delaware was separated from Pennsylvania in 1681, part of the border was defined as a 12-mile circle around New Castle, including waters of the Delaware River up to the low water mark. Not only was this a nightmare for surveyors, it resulted in the strange border of Salem County, and a bit of Gloucester. That border stands to this day.

There is a funny little bit of land in near Salem County that is attached to New Jersey, but belongs to Delaware. All rivers change their courses over time, and the land there built up since the borders were drawn in the 1700s, so technically it belongs to Delaware. A consequence of this is that New Jersey law enforcement has no jurisdiction there, and Delaware doesn't patrol it, so it is basically no-man's land. The sensible thing would be for Delaware to simply cede this useless appendage to New Jersey, but neither side seems interested in doing that. New Jersey has enough swamps already.

§ 165.553 Security Zone; Salem and Hope Creek Generation Stations, Delaware River, Salem County, New Jersey.

(a) Location. The following area is a security zone: the waters of the Delaware River in the vicinity of the Salem and Hope Creek Generation Stations bounded by a line drawn from a point located at 39°28′08.0″ N, 075°32′31.7″ W to 39°28′06.5″ N, 075°32′47.4″ W, thence to 39°27′28.4″ N, 075°32′15.8″ W, thence to 39°27′28.8″ N, 075°31′56.6″ W, thence to 39°27′39.9″ N, 075°31′51.6″ W, thence along the shoreline to the point of 39°28′08.0″ N, 075°32′31.7″ W. All coordinates reference Datum: NAD 1983.

(b) Regulations. (1) All persons are required to comply with the general regulations governing security zones in § 165.33 of this part.

(2) No person or vessel may enter or navigate within this security zone unless authorized to do so by the Coast Guard or designated representative. Any person or vessel authorized to enter the security zones must operate in strict conformance with any directions given by the Coast Guard or designated representative and leave the security zone immediately if the Coast Guard or designated representative so orders.

(3) The Coast Guard or designated representative enforcing this section can be contacted on VHF Marine Band Radio, channels 13 and 16. The Captain of the Port can be contacted at (215) 271-4807.

The Raritan River is what is left of the outflow of the Hudson River after it broke through the Verrazano Narrows about 6,000 years ago and changed to its present course. The modern Raritan River drains much of central New Jersey, with tributaries threading through the state from Princeton to Morristown. One northern tributary - the Lamington River - reaches almost to Lake Hopatcong. Zoom the map out to see the entire drainage. The thin red line is the "fall line" - the nominal division between uplands and lowlands.
