Well, it's that time of year again, time to renew the web hosting. And for those of you that don't know, that has become a lot more expensive than it used to be. Fifty dollars a year is now several hundred. Not to mention the price of domain names has gone up ten-fold.

And I just found out that the nice folks at PayPal disabled all my Support buttons, and I never got a notice (although that may be my fault.) In any case, it is all working again now, so if you would like to make a small donation to help defray these costs, it would be greatly appreciated.

Lake Lefferts is a man-made lake, the result of the construction in 1928 of Lake Lefferts Dam, which captures and stores the flow of Matawan Creek. This is the nicest spot in northern Monmouth County. The lake is in three parts:

  • The lower part that contains the dam and the launch area and extends up to the Route 34 bridge. This part is fairly deep and free of obstructions.
  • The upper part from Route 34 to Route 516. This part is much shallower and weedy, especially at the far end.
  • An unusable section beyond Route 516. This part is pretty much just mud. It may look like water, but trust me - don't go there.

The blue line on the map is the Delaware & Raritan, or D&R, Canal. The canal is a basically 40-mile-long pond. The water flows very slowly from west to east; it is essentially still. Access points generally coincide with bridges or locks.

The thin red line is the "fall line" - the nominal division between uplands and lowlands. It appears the builders of the canal wanted to stay above the fall line for the entire length, and followed the Millstone and Raritan Rivers. The series of dams resulting in a chain of lakes along the Lawrence Brook reveals a shorter alternate route the canal might have taken. These dams were not built until over 100 years later. Perhaps surveying in the 1830s was not good enough to discover this, or perhaps it would not work, but it certainly looks like it should.

The marker in the lower-center of the map is a super-easy put-in on Whale Creek, above. The other markers are a longer slog over the beach. All have convenient free parking (don't leave your vehicle in the launching area, that's a dick move!)

After Google sent me a bill for their map service, I decided to switch to OpenLayers maps, which are free. And I quickly came to like them better. At first, I thought the satellite imagery was neat, but it turns out that often things are hidden under trees. Also, the coordinates on the satellite imagery are less-than-accurate. Google's street maps are also less-than-accurate, and also less-than-informative, lacking accurate borders and labels ( although they do have lots of advertising! )

As I got the hang of OpenLayers, I started to redo a lot of things and simplify, getting rid of a lot of stuff I had done to make up for the shortcomings of Google Maps. OpenLayers maps look a lot like USGS quadrangles, and don't need a lot of help, just zoom in and there is a wealth of information. Google's maps are also strongly colored, which makes it difficult at times to do anything with them. OpenLayers uses nice muted colors that are easy to write over.

But satellite imagery is still interesting and informative, so I added links to both Google Earth and Bing servers. A great deal of functionality comes from an plugin I wrote to help-out the main maps plugin. I've also made a few changes and bug fixes to that, which I hope the developer will eventually incorporate. The irony of this, for Google anyway, is that the free products are actually much better than the paid ones.
