Monmouth County is located in the central portion of the U.S. state of New Jersey. It is bordered to its west by Mercer, Middlesex and Burlington Counties, to its south by Ocean County, to its east by the Atlantic Ocean, and to its north by the Raritan Bay (sharing a border with the boroughs of Staten Island, Brooklyn, and Queens in New York City, across it). Monmouth County's geographic area comprises 30% water.

The Swimming River is an extension of the Navesink. On the map above, you can see the main put-in is at the upper-right in the new (2015) county park. You need to check in at the ranger's hut; there is a ramp fee of $7 per vessel, including kayaks and canoes. The park also has a strict closing time, at which the gates are locked. About a mile long, in the Assunpink WMA. To the east you can find two other small lakes in the same watershed: Stone Tavern Lake (WMA), and Rising Sun Lake (WMA). Assunpink Creek drains into Lake Mercer, which is much larger than any of these.

This site varies, depending on when you go there. During the summer, and especially on weekends, there can be a lot of motorboats around. Other times, you can have the whole place to yourself.

Tie-Downs

To transport your kayak, you'll need some way of securing it, whether on a roof rack, truck bed, or trailer. I recommend the type of tie-down strap shown above, with hooks on the ends, and cam buckles, not ratchets. Ratchets are a pain in the ass, and you don't need all that much force anyway. In fact, you don't want too much force, your boat is only made of plastic!
