My preferred launch point is on the river behind the little strip mall off Route 527 / Old Matawan Rd. I have never had a problem parking here, although I don't think this would be a good place for a large group to show up. Entry can be messy if the water is low. I wouldn't wear white. The launch site is pretty muddy at low tide, try to hit this spot when there is plenty of water.

Much of this part or Raritan Bay is fenced-off because of lead pollution from the industrial slag used to build jetties and seawalls in the 1970s. Supposedly, most of it has been cleaned up, but the whole area remains 'off-limits'. Since the toxins leach into the water and are carried off by the currents, you really have to wonder about the entire bay. A quick search online will reveal more on this subject than you ever wanted to know.

Currents and Winds

When dealing with a non-negligible wind or current situation, you'll probably think it will be fun to go with it and have a good ride. That's fine if you are making a one-way trip, but if you are making a round-trip back to your starting point, this is a very bad idea. The boost can carry you much further than you realize, and then you'll have to fight against it all the way back. Your fun day out can turn into a miserable slog.

It's much better and safer to head into the current on the outbound leg, and let it carry you home on the return.
