Wildlife Hazards

Kayaking is a pretty safe activity in New Jersey. There are no crocodiles or alligators this far north, and dangerous sharks are extremely uncommon. However, there are still a few things you should watch out for.

Poison Ivy

Of course, there is Poison Ivy. It won't ruin your day, but it may ruin several weeks afterwards, so know what it looks like and don't get into it.

Clinging Jellyfish

These are encountered in sheltered brackish and marine waters (rivers and bays) in the spring and early summer, and are very dangerous. The sting is extremely painful, and depending on the severity and the victim's reaction, could land you in the hospital. During the day they cling to plants and surfaces, and feed at night. They begin to die off when the water temperature reaches 82F. I would say that if you see these in the water, just go somewhere else.

In the ocean, any red or purple jellyfish should be avoided, as well and the Portuguese Man'o'War.

Snapping Turtles & Snakes

A large snapping turtle can easily amputate a finger or a toe. Other turtles may bite as well, and snakes will also bite to defend themselves, although few are venomous. None of these will go out of their way to attack you. Don't be stupid and you'll be fine.

Bugs & Spiders

The spiders you'll encounter around the water are generally harmless and inoffensive. Most waterbugs can sting, approximately like a bee. In both cases, you'd have to work at it to have a problem. A real issue is green-head flies and mosquitoes - the New Jersey Air Force. If you keep moving, you can usually outpace the mosquitoes, but the green-heads are a different story. Bug spray is a good thing to have on any trip.

Other Animals

Most animals are wary of humans, and will avoid you. Any animal that doesn't is probably sick. This is especially true of raccoons, which are well-known carriers of rabies. Do not approach any raccoon (or other animal) that behaves strangely.
